Austin’s Hidden Gem: Mexican Food At Its Greatest

January 23rd, 2009

I have lived in Austin, Texas now for all of around 15 years. I had heard talk of the legendary Iron Cactus Mexican restaurant but had not, until now, got around to trying it out. What can I say? Great atmosphere, great drink, great venue and above all great Mexican food. I’m not usually a fan of the Mexican restaurant scene, which might explain my delay in trying this place. To be honest I just wish that I had tried it earlier!

Here’s a list of the things that I liked.

The drinks, which are inexpensive and presented on an ambient rooftop bar overlooking the center of town. Great for people watching and just enjoying the atmosphere with your friends.

The food, which was varied and invariably well presented and tasty. I particularly enjoyed the fish tacos and the tortilla soup which, I am told, this place is getting a bit of a reputation for. Deserved it is too, in my view.

The service, which was provided by polite, friendly and helpful staff. I really didn’t know what I was doing when I was ordering (like I say, I don’t usually go for Mexican food) but the staff patiently explained to me what I needed to know.

Definitely pleased with my experience overall — even if you’re not a big fan of Mexican food. Recommended.
