Finding out about Ares Ultra

Written by Laura on May 27th, 2008 | Filed under: General

When you want to share files you want the software that helps you do just that. You don’t want software that does a hundred other things as well. Not only is over specified software slower, less efficient and less reliable at its job, it can also make your job all that much harder. The learning curve on more complicated software is inevitably a lot steeper than software that just does what it says it is going to do.

This is where the designers of Ares Ultra come in. This is a filesharing application that allows you to share files. Ares Ultra is as simple as that. It doesn’t allow you to play solitaire or to process word documents but then that’s great because if I wanted that I’d fire up my word processor or solitaire programs. Ares Ultra does exactly what it says it’s going to do.

In a world where increased complexity and function seem to rule supreme, it is refreshing to see lowly Ares Ultra doing something right.

Should Salvia Be Banned

Written by Carmela on May 14th, 2008 | Filed under: General

The use of Salvia as a legal hallucinogenic drug may soon be curtailed across the US. The state Senate in California is currently examining a bill introduced by Assemblyman Anthony Adams that could see sale of Salvia to minors made illegal. Salvia is currently legal across California and most of the United States.

The short-term effects of Salvia have been observed to include hallucinations and disorientation. The long-term effects are currently less well understood and, according to opponents to the bill, the illegalization of the drug could well restrict the ability to perform research. This is more important when once considers the potential medical uses that Salvia could offer.

This obstruction to research is, according to Anthony Adams, greatly outweighed by the dangers posed to users when, for example, they lose control of their body and mind. The long-term effects might not be widely known, but there is enough evidence to suggest that the short-term effects are damaging enough on their own.

Free music downloads

Keeping ahead of whatever industry you are involved in is imperative for any business; the hoops each industry requires you to jump through, though, may be different. The music industry’s particular hoops at present are those involving the provision of free music downloads to customers and fans.

Over the last year or so the strategic importance of free music downloads has increasingly been seen as essential to the working of the industry. Services such as We7 and Spiral Frog are offering free music downloads (albeit with commercials) and bands like Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and now Coldplay are offering all or some of their latest albums for free (or effectively free, in the case of Radiohead) download. Free music downloads is becoming a crucial factor for commercial success.

Jim Guerinot, the talent manager who looks after acts including Nine Inch Nails, is adamant that free music downloads has a place in the industry: “I think free has been very important for a long time,” he said.

3rd Generation iPhone with GPS

Written by admin on May 8th, 2008 | Filed under: iphone apps

Say what you like about Apple – and I do – but they truly are the masters of marketing. Case in point: the new 3g iPhone.

The 3g iPhone is due to be released sometime this summer, almost a year after the original model came out. A few weeks before the 3g iPhone is released supplies of the old model will dry up; this should, if Apple’s plan goes to plan – leave a lacuna in supplies of the gadget which in turn will fuel a greater demand. Then, bang. Out comes the new model.

Once the new 3g iPhone is out no doubt looking sleeker than ever (it is rumored to be 2.5mm thinner than the current model (which is pretty darn thin)), AT&T and Apple will offer the new model with a massive $200 price cut. Make this deal available to new customers that have to sign a two year deal for the service provided, and you’re on for a financial success story.

Salvia Divinorum

Written by Carmela on May 8th, 2008 | Filed under: General

There are a number of naturally occurring plants that, if prepared and used in the correct way, can induce hallucinogenic effects similar to those experienced by users of entirely illegal drugs. These plants are largely legal and are widely available. Salvia Divinorum is the drug leading the charge for these naturally occurring narcotics.

Salvia Divinorum is a member of the Sage family native to Mexico and is the cousin of the popular garden plants Salvia. While little is known about the effects of the drug it is known to induce dreamlike experiences in its users.

Scientists have published early studies stating that Salvia Divinorum – and more specifically its active ingredient Salvinorin A – might be refines and eventually lead to new drugs that can treat effectively diseases like schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s. Although the early studies are promising it is important to note that scientists are still very much in the learning stage with Salvia Divinorum, and any significant advances are some years away.

O2 networks offers free Music Downloads

Written by Laura on May 6th, 2008 | Filed under: General

Music is an age old right and to charge for it seems a little rude. This is the opinion of many that believe to own copyright on a piece of music – and more importantly to charge for that music – is akin to selling the artists’ souls. Perhaps big business is starting to agree: many have signed or are considering deals to provide music downloads to customers.

Napster, the unlimited music downloads God, is in talks with telephony giants o2 and Vodafone with the promise of following Nokia’s lead in providing music downloads to its phone customers. Nokia’s deal just got better with Sony BMG (yes, that’s the same Sony…) offering its back catalogue for unlimited music downloads.

How times change, and Sony is now emerging as one of the winners in this period history: its relationship with We7 saw all of Sony’s catalogue available for online streaming from the site. For free.

What others are saying:

iPhone will soon be in everyones pocket

Written by admin on May 1st, 2008 | Filed under: iphone apps

At &T has announced to have tailored a deal with apple allowing them to pay partly for the 3G iPhone expected to roll on the anniversary of the Apple iPhone . Of Course Apple will get a cut anywhere from 9% to 25 % on the monthly revenue that At &T will be racking in, however the most important result of this venture is that iPhone will soon be like any other phone seen in everyone’s pocket that is a very good thing for the iPhone Download industry. More and more people are going to look for those downlaods and cool iPhone applications to go with it. The nice aspect of this is their will be more demand for such applications and the iPhone developers will compete for that market with the Android application developers. This is apple’s answer to Google and in the iPhone SDK Google android Proxy war that started recently. When giants compete consumers benefit , so let the battle begin.
